"Don't eat with someone who brags about feeding you." - No clue who said this *shrugs*
If I had a penny for all the times I've helped someone I'd be a multi-millionaire. OK, I'm exaggerating a bit. The fact is, becoming someone valuable has an upside to it that often doesn't include public recognition. Honestly, if you want the cold hard truth, many of the people you help will never recognize you or even worse forget about you. But don't let that discourage you.
Ask yourself: Do I crave attention or favor? Do I want recognition or credit?
Attention vs Favor
Attention is when people see you, favor is when God sees you. If that person you help doesn't want to give you props in public, God will. It may not come in the form of fame, but it will come in the form of opportunity. In my book "Don't Dumb Down Your Greatness" I have a quote where I say "Don't do things for people to pay you back, do things for God to pay you back." I dream so big that there is no way one human could give me anything in return that will equal that. So when you give, give expecting nothing, and you will receive more than you can imagine.
Recognition vs Credit
You should always receive your credit! If you helped someone out beyond surface level and you worked hard on a project, credit is necessary, and you should fight for it. Credit is how you build your resume. But you have to learn how to promote yourself and leverage your credit. I struggle with this. Many people look to others to help them leverage their credit through recognition. People with a budget often hire PR firms to do it for them. You'll get it sometimes. But no one will be your best cheerleader besides yourself. That's not bragging. Leveraging your credit becomes bragging only when you do it excessively.
I hope this email has been helpful to you. ;)
